What Causes Ageing ?

What is Healthy skin :

  • warm to the touch – not hot or cold
  • smooth and intact – no breaks in the surface
  • not dry and flaky.

Healthy skin is an achievable goal. We can reduce or avoid the damaging effects of the sun and other environmental factors.

We can also take preventative measure to how we live, what we eat, how we avoid stress and the pollutants we breathe.

However, at some stage, we will suffer skin conditions that affects the health of our skin. These disorders will affect our skin and will affect our general health, self esteem and quality of life. They may range from mildly irritating to fatal.

Some skin conditions are visible to others and some are embarrassing, meaning we avoid seeking medical advice or treatment.

It’s important to get your skin checked for any irregularities. As we get older our skin, like the rest of our body, goes through a series of changes.

Some skin conditions are :

  • Eczema / Psoriasis
  • Rosacea
  • Acne
  • Glycation (Heavy wrinkling)
  • Pigmnetation
  • Vascular
  • Keratosis Pilaris
  • Hyperplasia
  • Seborheicc Keratosis

There are variety of factors that contribute to the level and speed our skin will age.

These include:

  • skin type – whether we have fair or dark skin
  • nutrition and general health.
  • sun exposure – dependent on where we have lived and how much UV damage we have experienced
  • genetic background
  • lifestyle and smoking
  • outdoor work

Skin Ages due to a number of reasons:

  1. Intrinsic ageing : the inevitable changes caused by the passing of time as we age.
  2. Photoageing : caused by the effects of the sun over time, 90% of visible signs of ageing in Australians is caused by chronic sun exposure.
  3. Influences : the nature of our lifestyle, smoking and genetic characteristics play a part in these changes.
